Galleria Tbilisi, located on the main avenue of the Georgian capital, adjoining Freedom Square, and standing over the site of the former Tbilisi Department Store, partly replicates the perceived scale of the former building from the street side. Like the old department store, the building stands higher than street level and is elegantly linked to the main pedestrian walkway through a set of stairs. As before, the lower floors are set back, while the upper levels are suspended. Under the revised architectural project (Moshe Tzur Architects Int. LTD, Tel Aviv, Israel), from 2015-2017, the new building was designed to have a direct internal link with Freedom Square metro station and the Alexander Griboedov Drama Theater. Moreover, the geometry of the redesigned building has a fragmented, asymmetrical structure that cascades over the upper floors. Light-colored reflective paint was also applied to the bare areas of its modern façades, consequently adding an airiness and lightness to the building.

Asymmetrically cascaded interior balconies encircle the exterior perimeter and in places are interconnected with bridges, which creates a vertically open space. The interior is adorned with an atrium and ensconced with light-colored wood, while the walls are painted white to expand the range of perception throughout the interior space, and this invites the visitor towards the upper floors, connected by escalators.

Work to be performed under the contract:

• dismantling of the old building;
• construction of the building structures;
• block piling works;
• installation of engineering networks;
• façade finishing;
• interior finishing.
